Tripura Congress suspends programmes citing “lack of security”

Agartala, March 4 : Piling pressure on the state government ahead of on Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit on the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Biplab Kumar Deb’s government, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Friday announced temporary suspension of all party programmes including mass gatherings, complaining of lack of security. Ashis Kumar Saha, Former BJP MLA who joined Congress last month, alleged that with the “direct indulgence” of the Chief Minister and a few BJP leaders, “criminals” sheltered by the BJP, have been attacking every assembly or programme of opposition parties in broad daylight in front of the police, but no action has been taken yet. Groups of ruling party cadres, riding motorcycles and wearing full headgear, were attacking the meetings and programmes of opposition parties including those of the Congress. There were seven such incidents last week. Though police complaints were lodged after every incident, nobody has been arrested, said Saha. “Unfortunately, senior leaders and ministers of BJP have been found leading the perpetrators in public, but the police kept mum despite specific complaints. Whoever opposeS the BJP has been attacked, houses have been vandalised. “The matter has been taken up with the Director-General of Police and Governor by the All India Congress Committee. Therefore, we have suspended all our public programmes for the time being and we may seek judicial intervention,” he said. An AICC delegation led by Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Chowdhury has been scheduled to visit the state for taking the stock of situation next week, he informed. He expressed apprehension that the law and order situation would deteriorate further after March 10 when all the first-time MLAs would be eligible for getting all benefits even if they resign. Congress has been claiming for some time that a number of BJP MLAs would cross over to its fold after the Deb government completes its fourth year in office. Shah is scheduled to visit Tripura on March 8 to take part in the Deb government’s fourth anniversary celebrations the next day. BB SSP
