Mussoorie, May 6: A tragic road accident occurred early Wednesday on the Mussoorie-Dehradun route in Uttarakhand, where a truck loaded with rations and cold drinks plunged approximately 100 meters into a gorge. The driver died on the spot, while his helper sustained serious injuries.
According to reports, around 5:30 AM, the truck, heading towards Dehradun and located about 200 meters beyond Mussoorie Lake, suddenly lost control and fell into the deep gorge. Upon receiving the news, local police, fire services, 108 ambulance teams, and personnel from the sub-district hospital rushed to the scene.
The incident created chaos in the area, prompting immediate rescue operations. The depth of the gorge and the challenging terrain hampered the rescue efforts, leading to the involvement of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). All agencies collaborated to conduct a joint relief operation.
Police stated that the truck was transporting cold drinks, oil, and other rations from Dehradun railway station to Uttarkashi when the driver lost control, resulting in the vehicle’s fall. The deceased driver, Mubarik, was a resident of Timli, Sahaspur, Dehradun. Meanwhile, the helper, Sajid, was critically injured.
Rescue teams worked diligently to retrieve both individuals from the gorge. Sajid was promptly sent to the hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was dispatched for post-mortem examination.
Mussoorie police chief Devendra Chauhan indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have dozed off, causing the truck to veer off course and fall into the gorge. Traffic on the route was disrupted for some time following the accident, creating a sense of panic among local residents. Community members expressed concerns over the frequent accidents on hilly roads and urged the administration to implement robust road safety measures.
Chauhan confirmed that the family of the deceased has been notified, and a team has been formed to investigate the accident. Measures are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
