Bengaluru, February 12: A heartbreaking road accident occurred in the Thanisandra area of Bengaluru on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two innocent children after being struck by a school bus.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media following the release of CCTV footage. It took place near the police quarters within the jurisdiction of the Henoor Traffic Police Station.
The victims have been identified as two-year-old Varsha and four-year-old Bhanu. According to police reports, both children were riding a scooter with their guardian, Nagaragouda, who is a constable. He was reportedly on his way to buy milk with his daughter Varsha and niece Bhanu.
At the time of the incident, school was in session, and a private school bus was approaching to pick up students. Upon seeing the bus, Nagaragouda pulled his scooter to the side of the road to allow it to pass. During this moment, the bus driver allegedly attempted to make a U-turn and collided with the stationary scooter. The impact was so severe that both children fell onto the road, and the rear wheel of the bus ran over them.
Immediately following the accident, the injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital. However, due to severe injuries and excessive bleeding, doctors pronounced them dead upon arrival. Nagaragouda sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver had previously been involved in a minor collision with an auto-rickshaw and was reportedly driving recklessly. Police stated that the driver failed to see the parked scooter, leading to the tragic accident.
Nagaragouda expressed his grief over the incident, stating, “I was on my way to buy milk and had only traveled about 200 meters. Upon seeing the school bus, I stopped my vehicle to let it pass. I thought the driver would see us, but he suddenly turned towards my scooter and hit us. If he had slowed down and stopped, both of our children would be alive today.”
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) for the North Division visited the scene to assess the situation. The Henoor Traffic Police have detained the school bus driver for questioning. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, and further investigations are ongoing.
The bodies of both children have been sent to the Yelahanka Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. The hospital has seen a gathering of relatives and family members, creating a somber atmosphere as they mourn the loss.
