New Delhi, March 10: A devastating landslide at a construction site in Gurugram on Monday evening resulted in the deaths of seven workers, with four others injured and hospitalized. There are concerns that ten more workers may still be trapped under the debris.
According to police officials, the incident occurred at a site where a sewage treatment plant was being constructed for an upcoming residential project. It is reported that a wall collapsed, causing a significant soil subsidence in the building’s basement, leading to this tragic event. Rescue operations are currently underway, involving police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil defense teams, and firefighters.
The accident took place between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM near the Gurugram-Rewari border. However, authorities were notified of the incident only after 9:15 PM when a hospital reported multiple casualties.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Manesar) Deepak Kumar Jwaria confirmed the incident. He stated that initial investigations revealed that five workers had already succumbed to their injuries by the time they reached the hospital. The deaths of the others were confirmed later at the scene.
βThe police received information from the hospital after 9:15 PM, where five fatalities were reported. Rescue teams were dispatched immediately,β he said.
Survivors and contractors present at the construction site informed police that many workers were in the basement when the building collapsed. They claimed that at least ten more workers might still be trapped beneath the rubble.
In response to the incident, civil defense personnel, firefighters, and SDRF members launched a large-scale rescue operation. Heavy machinery, floodlights, and other equipment were deployed to clear debris and search for the trapped workers.
Senior police and district administration officials also arrived at the scene to oversee and expedite the rescue efforts.
Authorities have yet to identify the deceased workers. They further stated that if complaints are received from the families of the deceased or injured, an FIR may be registered. The rescue operation is still ongoing.
