Ranchi, May 10: A 29-year-old teacher, Payal Kumari, tragically ended her life by consuming a toxic substance in the Dakhra area of Ranchi’s Khilari police station jurisdiction. Authorities have taken her body for post-mortem examination following the incident reported on Sunday.
Initial investigations suggest that deep mental distress and harsh societal judgments were significant factors leading to this suicide. This incident is linked to a previous event on December 26, 2025, when Payal was shot by her alleged boyfriend, Sunil Kevat, also known as Chhotu, while she was on her way to school. Following the shooting, Sunil took his own life, while Payal fought for her life in the hospital for an extended period.
Although she physically recovered and returned to teaching, the changed perceptions in her community took a toll on her mental well-being. According to family members, everything seemed normal after she returned from school on Saturday. She had dinner and went to her room. However, her health deteriorated late that night. By the time her family rushed her to the hospital, it was too late, and she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Local residents report that since the release of a ‘suicide video’ left by Sunil, Payal faced continuous mockery and taunts from people around her. The Khilari police are now investigating the circumstances that may have compelled Payal to take such a drastic step.
