New Delhi, May 13: A tragic incident occurred in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on Tuesday evening when strong winds and heavy rain caused walls and tin roofs to collapse at a well-known temple complex. Six devotees lost their lives in this horrific accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of life and property due to the wall collapse in Sangli, Maharashtra. My condolences are with the affected families during this difficult time. I wish for the swift recovery of the injured.”
The incident took place at the famous Margudewadi Temple (Margubai Devi Temple) in the village of Mothewadi, located in the Jat tehsil of Sangli district. Devotees had gathered for prayers when the weather suddenly changed in the evening, leading to heavy rain and strong winds. Seeking shelter from the storm, many devotees leaned against a wall and tin roofs in the temple complex. Suddenly, due to the intense winds, the wall and roofs collapsed onto the devotees, causing panic and chaos.
Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi reported that the temple was crowded with devotees on that Tuesday. At the time of the incident, approximately 350 devotees were present in the temple complex. The sudden storm and heavy rain caused many to cluster near the weak wall and tin shed, which was the primary reason for this tragic accident. According to police, six devotees died after being trapped under the debris and tin sheets, while 14 others sustained serious injuries.
Immediately following the incident, a rescue operation was initiated with the help of local residents and police. Those trapped under the rubble were rescued and taken to the hospital. Police officials confirmed that all injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
