Raipur, May 2: A significant setback has struck the security forces in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-affected Kanker district. An IED explosion near the border of Kanker and Narayanpur districts resulted in the deaths of three members of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), while one soldier sustained severe injuries. The incident occurred as the security team was engaged in de-mining, area domination, and search operations.
According to reports, four DRG personnel were injured in the blast. Inspector Sukhram Vatti, Constable Krishna Komra, and Constable Sanjay Garhpale died at the scene. Meanwhile, Constable Paramanand Komra, who was critically injured, is receiving advanced medical care.
Bastar Range Inspector General Sundar Raj Pattilingam stated that based on information from Maoist cadres who had surrendered in recent months and other intelligence inputs, security forces had recovered and neutralized hundreds of IEDs. Despite these efforts, explosives hidden by Maoists still pose a significant threat. He noted that today’s unfortunate incident occurred while the Kanker district police team was attempting to deactivate an IED when it suddenly detonated.
In the aftermath of this incident, security forces have intensified search operations throughout the area. Additionally, arrangements are being made to respectfully send the bodies of the fallen soldiers back to their hometowns.
It is noteworthy that on March 31, Chhattisgarh was officially declared free from Maoism. This marks the first major explosion related to Maoist activities since that announcement. The landmines previously laid by Maoists in the dense forests of the Bastar region continue to pose a serious risk to both security forces and local residents. Ongoing campaigns are in place to remove these mines, but the danger remains.
