Tragic Fire Incident in Vivek Vihar Claims Lives and Challenges Rescue Efforts

New Delhi, May 3: A devastating fire broke out in the Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara district, prompting an immediate response from fire officials. Fire Officer Mukesh Verma reported that the fire brigade arrived promptly after receiving the emergency call.

“This incident occurred in the Vivek Vihar Extension. Due to the nighttime conditions, rescue operations faced significant challenges. Upon arrival, our team discovered that it was a four-story building with grills at the entrance, making it difficult to access and evacuate individuals inside,” he explained.

During the rescue operation, a total of 15 people were safely evacuated. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. One individual suffered severe burns, with approximately 30% of their body affected, while others were treated and discharged shortly after. Regarding the cause of the fire, Mukesh stated that it remains under investigation and will be confirmed only after a thorough inquiry by the Delhi Police.

Local residents suspect that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, although this has not been officially verified. Tragically, nine fatalities have been confirmed, with several others reported injured. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing.

According to reports, the fire control room received the alert at 3:48 AM. Immediately, police and fire department teams were dispatched. Upon arrival, it was evident that the fire had spread rapidly across the second, third, and fourth floors of the building. In response, approximately 12 to 14 fire engines were deployed to the scene.

Fire brigade, police, crime teams, traffic police, and DDMA personnel collaborated on a large-scale rescue operation. After nearly two hours of intense efforts, the fire was brought under control by 6:25 AM. However, search operations continued to ensure no one was left trapped inside.

Shahdara’s DCP, Rajendra Prasad Meena, confirmed that the team arrived promptly after receiving the call around 4 AM.
