Tragic Fire in Madhyamgram Claims One Life and Injures Several Others

Kolkata, March 4: A devastating fire broke out in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on Holi, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

According to police reports, the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, and efforts to identify the individual are ongoing. The injured were promptly rescued by emergency teams and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Local sources indicate that the fire ignited in a row of shops near Madhyamgram railway station, causing widespread panic in the area. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud explosions, resembling gas cylinder blasts, as the flames rapidly spread from one shop to another. Upon receiving the alert, four fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

Officials from the Madhyamgram police station arrived quickly to manage the situation.

Initial information suggests that the fire started on Madhyamgram Station Road, where a restaurant, a sweet shop, and several other businesses were located. The flames quickly escalated, completely destroying several shops.

The fire department’s preliminary investigation indicates that a gas cylinder explosion may have triggered the blaze. The flames then spread to nearby buildings, complicating rescue operations in this densely populated area.

After approximately an hour of firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control. Shortly thereafter, firefighters discovered a severely burned body inside one of the charred shops.

Barasat SDPO Vidyagar Ajinkya Anant stated that fire and police personnel arrived at the scene immediately and worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire. He noted that a large crowd had gathered, hindering firefighting efforts, necessitating the removal of onlookers.

Officials have yet to determine the total number of shops affected, but initial assessments suggest that four to five shops were completely destroyed. A detailed investigation into the exact causes of the fire is currently underway.
