
New Delhi, May 3: A devastating fire broke out early Sunday morning in a multi-story residential building in the Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara, causing widespread panic. The blaze spread rapidly, engulfing several floors within moments. So far, nine lives have been lost.
According to reports, the fire erupted in a multi-story building in Vivek Vihar Phase-1. The fire control room received the emergency call at 3:48 AM, prompting immediate dispatch of police and fire department teams to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered flames raging on the second, third, and fourth floors. Given the severity of the situation, approximately 12 to 14 fire engines were deployed to combat the blaze. Firefighters, police, crime teams, traffic police, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) collaborated on rescue operations.
After nearly two hours of intense efforts, the fire was brought under control by 6:25 AM. However, search operations continued, particularly on the upper floors, to ensure no one remained trapped inside.
DCP Rajendra Prasad Meena of Shahdara reported that the fire call was received around 4 AM, and teams were promptly dispatched. He stated that it took about two hours to extinguish the flames, after which the search operation commenced. During the rescue efforts, approximately 10 to 15 individuals were safely evacuated, with two suffering minor injuries and transported to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Other injured individuals have also been admitted to hospitals for treatment.
Initial investigations indicate that nine people have perished in the fire. This number may rise as the search operation is still ongoing.
Local residents described the fire as so horrific that many had no time to react. Some fled outside, while others became trapped inside.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but police and investigative agencies are examining all angles of the incident.
