Amravati, August 24: A devastating fire broke out early Monday morning in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the district women’s hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra. Tragically, three newborns lost their lives in this incident. Fortunately, hospital doctors and staff managed to save many other infants.
Initial reports indicate that around 3:30 AM, an explosion occurred in the NICU located on the third floor of the hospital, leading to the outbreak of fire. It is believed that the explosion originated from a ventilator.
At the time of the incident, there were 39 newborns in the NICU. As smoke and flames spread, the on-duty doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff quickly began evacuating the infants from the affected ward. Most of the children were successfully moved to a safe area away from the fire and smoke.
Sadly, the three newborns were severely burned and later succumbed to their injuries. Among the rescued infants, six required critical medical attention and have been admitted to a super-specialty hospital for further treatment.
The fire also destroyed medical equipment and other supplies in the neonatal unit. After significant effort, the fire was brought under control. Fortunately, it did not spread to other areas of the hospital.
