Agartala, April 4: In a heartbreaking incident, an elderly woman lost her life due to an elephant attack in Jumbari village, located in the Teliamura sub-district of Tripura. Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the victim’s family on Saturday, offering assurances of all possible assistance.
The attack occurred early Saturday morning when 70-year-old Manimala Debbarma was in her home’s courtyard. A wild elephant suddenly charged at her, resulting in her immediate death.
Before heading to an election rally in Chakmaghat, Chief Minister Saha met with the grieving family. He expressed his condolences, stating, “This is an extremely unfortunate incident. I have come to assess the situation personally. The government will provide all possible support.”
The administration has already provided the victim’s family with an immediate aid of ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), while the Forest Department has contributed an additional ₹1 lakh.
Accompanying the Chief Minister were Sambit Patra and other officials.
Ajit Debbarma, the victim’s son, reported that the elephant attacked suddenly, inflicting severe injuries that led to his mother’s death.
Following the incident, anger erupted in the area, leading to a tense situation. Upset villagers attacked the Forest Department office, resulting in injuries to the Sub-Divisional Forest Officer (SDFO), while the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) had to flee the scene. A journalist was also assaulted during the chaos.
Eyewitnesses have claimed that the police present at the scene failed to manage the situation effectively.
Officials noted that human-elephant conflict is not a new issue in this region. In the past few years, at least five people have died in elephant attacks in just Khowai district.
Experts suggest that the lack of food and water in forests, along with human encroachment, often drives elephants into populated areas, leading to such tragic incidents.
