New Delhi, May 1: A tragic cruise accident at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, has shaken the nation. The death toll has risen to nine, with at least four passengers still reported missing. Rescue operations are ongoing at a rapid pace. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan has expressed his sorrow over the incident.
In a post on his official X account, Vice President Radhakrishnan stated, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property due to the boat capsizing incident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. I pray that they find strength during this difficult time and that the injured recover swiftly.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered an investigation into the accident. He mentioned that preliminary information suggests the incident was caused by a cyclone, although detailed insights will emerge after the investigation report. The Chief Minister confirmed that NDRF and SDRF teams are deployed at the site for rescue operations. Additionally, tourism minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, public works minister Rakesh Singh, and ACS Sanjay Dubey, along with administrative officials, have been sent to the scene immediately.
The Chief Minister also announced that members of the rescue teams who played a crucial role in saving tourists will be honored on August 15. Furthermore, the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance of 400,000 rupees from the state government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed profound sadness over the incident, announcing that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will provide 200,000 rupees to the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees to the injured.
The Indian Army has also taken charge in the search for missing passengers. Upon the district administration’s request, the Army’s ‘Central India Region’ has initiated humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. A junior commissioned officer and 13 soldiers, along with trained divers from the Shatrujeet Brigade, have been airlifted to Jabalpur to assist in the search efforts.
