Tragic Car Accident in Islampur Claims Three Lives, Four Injured

Kolkata, March 3: A tragic incident occurred in the Islampur area of North Dinajpur district, West Bengal, where a car plunged into a pond, resulting in the deaths of three young men and injuries to four others, police reported on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Surajit Das, Boney Das, and Mukund Das, all aged between 18 and 20 years. Among the injured is Atanu Shil, a resident of Nadia district. All four injured individuals have been admitted to the Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital.

Reports indicate that the seven young men worked at a motor garage owned by Subhash Karmakar in the Islampur police jurisdiction. It is alleged that Atanu Shil and Mukund Das were both in love with the same woman, leading to ongoing disputes between them. On the night of the incident, Atanu was staying at a hotel in Islampur.

Later, Mukund, Atanu, and five other young men took a trip in the garage owner’s son’s car towards the Fatipukur area, near the Bihar border. During the journey, a heated argument reignited between Atanu and Mukund inside the vehicle. Allegations suggest that Atanu was assaulted in the car, resulting in chaos and a physical altercation. Amidst the commotion, the driver lost control, and the car fell into the pond.

Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing loud noises and managed to rescue all seven young men from the submerged vehicle. Unfortunately, three of them had already succumbed to their injuries by that time.

Upon receiving the information, police from the Putiya station in Bihar also arrived at the scene. The bodies of the three deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations at Kishanganj Medical Hospital. The Islampur police and Bihar police have jointly launched an investigation into the incident.
