Tragic Bargi Dam Incident: Uncertainty Surrounds Victim Count, Administration Under Scrutiny

Jabalpur, May 1: The Bargi Dam incident in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, has left many families in mourning, while raising critical questions about the administration’s response. Confusion persists regarding the exact number of people aboard the cruise at the time of the accident.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reported on Friday that nine bodies have been recovered, and 29 individuals have been safely rescued. However, State Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi expressed concerns that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

In response to the tragedy, the state government has ordered a formal investigation and imposed an immediate ban on all water tourism activities in Madhya Pradesh. The cruise capsized on Thursday evening in the Bargi reservoir on the Narmada River due to adverse weather conditions.

The most pressing question remains: how many people were on the cruise during the incident? While official figures from the state tourism department and tourism corporation have yet to be released, CCTV footage has complicated matters further.

Surveillance cameras captured approximately 43 individuals in the vicinity, but further investigations suggest that there may have been 36 to 37 passengers aboard, excluding the crew. Some reports indicate that certain passengers were given free rides, complicating the task of compiling an accurate passenger list.

This incident has sparked intense debate regarding jurisdiction and safety regulations. With over 27,000 hectares of land submerged and thousands of families affected, questions are being raised about which department owns the reservoir and who authorized tourism activities in this area, designated for agriculture, electricity, and drinking water.

Chief Minister Yadav also announced that local heroes, who risked their lives to save others during the cruise accident, will be honored on Independence Day.

Minister Lodhi stated that this incident is inexcusable and assured that strict action will be taken against cruise operators or officials if negligence is found during the investigation.
