Palghar, May 18: A devastating accident occurred on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday. The incident took place near the Dhaniwari area, where a tempo carrying wedding guests collided violently with a speeding container. As a result of this tragic event, 13 people have lost their lives, and 20 others are reported to be seriously injured.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his sorrow over the incident through a post on his social media account. He stated, “It is extremely tragic that 13 lives were lost in an accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Dahanu, Palghar, when a tempo collided with a container. I am deeply saddened to hear about this incident and extend my heartfelt condolences to all affected.”
He further mentioned, “Approximately 20 people have been injured and are currently being treated at the Kasa sub-district hospital and the Dhundalwadi hospital. I am in constant contact with the district administration. The Superintendent of Police was present at the scene. Rescue operations have been completed. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. The state government will provide financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased.”
According to reports, the accident occurred around 3:30 PM on Monday. The tempo, filled with wedding attendees, was en route from Bapu village in Dahanu to a wedding ceremony in Dhaniwari. As the vehicle approached the Dhaniwari area, a speeding container coming from Gujarat towards Mumbai suddenly lost control. It is reported that the container overturned onto the tempo carrying the wedding guests. The impact was so severe that it caused panic at the scene.
Eyewitnesses described the accident as horrific, with many succumbing to their injuries on the spot. The sight of debris and injured individuals left bystanders in shock. For a brief period, traffic on the highway was completely halted.
Local residents quickly came forward to assist, and the police were notified. Police and rescue teams arrived promptly to commence rescue operations. The injured were immediately taken to the nearby Kasa sub-district hospital, where a team of doctors is providing treatment.
Among the deceased are Suresh Ratna Lakhate, Pandu Ganpat Lakhate, Kalu Govind Lakhate, Sunil Arjun Dandekar, Chima Govind Kurhada, Namita Vitthal Dandekar, Sarika Santosh Lakhate, Ayush Sitaram Lakhate, Sagar Namdev Shende, Vandana Shivram Walvi, Saloni Shivram Walvi, Ajay Ahadi, and Rianshi Santosh Lakhate.
