
Houston, April 5: Tommy Paul secured his spot in the first ATP Tour clay final by defeating Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on April 5. The American player triumphed in a thrilling match that lasted three sets, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7).
With this victory, Paul ended Tiafoe’s hopes of reaching the championship match at the ATP 250 event in Houston for the fourth consecutive time. The match lasted nearly two hours and 45 minutes.
Paul started strong, taking the first set 7-5. Tiafoe quickly bounced back in the second set, breaking early and winning it 6-4. A 90-minute rain delay interrupted the match, slightly disrupting Paul’s momentum. However, he showcased resilience by saving break points and ultimately clinching the set.
In the third set, both players fought hard. Tiafoe took an early break, but Paul rallied to lead 4-2. Tiafoe leveled the score at 4-4, pushing the match into a tiebreak. Paul led 6-4 in the tiebreak, but Tiafoe saved two match points. Ultimately, the fourth-seeded Paul held his nerve to win the thrilling contest.
