TMC Leader Arrested on Fraud Charges Before Mamata Banerjees Rally in Hooghly

TMC leader Tumpa Mete was arrested for alleged fraud just hours before Mamata Banerjees rally in Hooghly, claiming political revenge.

Hooghly, September 26 (Daily Kiran) : Just hours before a rally led by West Bengal‘s former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee, police arrested Tumpa Mete, a former member of the Hooghly district council. The arrest occurred on September 26 in Hooghly district.

The Dankuni police apprehended Mete on allegations of fraud related to job placements. According to a police official, she is implicated in the notorious school recruitment scam that has seen many unqualified candidates listed for positions.

In a statement to the media following her arrest, Mete dismissed the charges as baseless, labeling them as political vengeance. She asserted that her arrest, coming just before the rally, was a calculated move to undermine her and her party.

Reports indicate that Mete is accused of submitting forged documents to secure a job in a school. Her name also appeared on the 2016 SSC recruitment panel, which was annulled by the Supreme Court due to corruption allegations. Currently, she works as a non-teaching staff member in a government school.

Authorities plan to present Mete in the Serampore district court on Saturday, where they will request her police custody.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee is set to address her supporters at the Serampore Court Grounds from 4 PM to 6 PM. After initial police denial, the Calcutta High Court granted permission for the rally, allowing a maximum attendance of 1,000 people.

Asit Majumdar, TMC’s Hooghly district convener and former MLA, stated that preparations for the rally are ongoing despite heavy rainfall. He assured that the party would fully comply with the High Court’s directives and that the event would commence as scheduled. He also noted that a large turnout of the public to see the leader would be welcomed.
