Rajkot: Indian left-handed explosive batsman Tilak Verma underwent an emergency operation in Rajkot, putting his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 in jeopardy. Due to the sudden surgery, he is also likely to miss the five-match T20 series against New Zealand.
According to information received, Tilak Verma experienced severe abdominal pain on Wednesday morning after breakfast in Rajkot. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where scans revealed the need for an urgent operation. Following the advice of the BCCI Centre of Excellence medical team based in Bengaluru, Verma underwent a successful surgery at a super-speciality hospital in Rajkot. His current condition is stable, and he is expected to be discharged by Friday.
A medical expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that recovery from such emergency surgery usually takes up to a month. The duration depends on the extent of tissue damage. The operation involves a highly innervated structure which can twist and block blood supply, causing severe pain and necessitating urgent intervention.
There is uncertainty over Tilak Verma’s availability for the T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7, 2026. India’s opening match is scheduled against the USA on the same day. His participation in the New Zealand T20 series next month also appears unlikely. Final confirmation on his fitness for the World Cup is expected within the next one to two weeks.
No replacement player has been announced yet for the New Zealand series in case Verma is ruled out.
If Tilak Verma misses the World Cup, it would be a significant setback for the Indian team. Known for his dependability, Verma played a crucial role in India’s Asia Cup triumph by scoring an unbeaten 69 runs off 53 balls against Pakistan in the final, helping the team recover from a precarious position of 20 runs for 3 wickets. In 40 T20 matches, he has amassed 1,183 runs, including two centuries and six half-centuries.
