Thunderstorms and Rain Expected in Tamil Nadu, Alert Issued for Chennai and Surrounding Districts

Chennai, September 2: The Regional Meteorological Center of Tamil Nadu has forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Chennai and several other districts on Wednesday.

According to the weather department, a weak atmospheric circulation over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu is contributing to the rainfall.

On Wednesday, moderate rain with thunderstorms may occur in one or two places in districts adjacent to the Western Ghats. Similarly, areas in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Salem, Namakkal, Thiruvarur, and Thanjavur are also expected to experience similar weather conditions.

In other parts of Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal region, light rain with thunderstorms may occur in some areas.

On Thursday, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely in one or two places in Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Madurai, Shivganga, and Pudukkottai districts, as well as Puducherry. Light rain is expected in other parts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal.

On Friday, moderate rain may occur in some areas of the Western Ghats, while light showers are anticipated in the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. From September 5 to 7, light to moderate rain may continue in the Western Ghats, while other areas are expected to see light rainfall.

Between September 2 and 5, maximum temperatures in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu could rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Some interior areas may experience temperatures 2 to 4 degrees above normal. However, no significant changes in temperature are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

In Chennai, partial cloud cover is expected today. Light to moderate rain may occur in some parts of the city during the evening or night. The maximum temperature is anticipated to range between 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will be between 26 to 27 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea on Wednesday and Thursday. Strong winds of 45 to 55 km/h are expected, with gusts potentially reaching up to 65 km/h. Similar strong winds are also likely in the southern parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. However, no warnings have been issued for the Arabian Sea from September 2 to 5.
