Thiago Agustin Triumphs Over Ben Shelton After Losing First Set at US Mens Clay Court Championship

Houston, April 4: Argentine player Thiago Agustin Tirante achieved a remarkable victory over top seed Ben Shelton at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. After losing the first set, Thiago made a strong comeback to secure the win.

Tirante lost the first set 7-6 (5) but regained control, winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. The Argentine showcased an impeccable serving performance, winning all 16 of his service games with composure and skill.

For Shelton, this defeat marks a challenging period. Since winning the title against Taylor Fritz at the Dallas Open in February, he has not progressed beyond the Round of 16.

In other matches in Houston, Argentine Roman Andres Buruchaga defeated third seed Learner Tien 7-5, 6-4, while Tommy Paul advanced by beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2.

In the night match, second seed Frances Tiafoe triumphed over Alexei Popyrin in a thrilling contest that lasted nearly three hours, winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Tiafoe will face Paul in an all-American semifinal, while Buruchaga will meet Tirante in an all-Argentine matchup.

Argentine Marco Trungelliti also advanced by defeating third seed Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, despite committing eight double faults alongside six aces. Fellow Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli won a three-set battle against Luca Van Assche, coming back from a 0-6 loss to win 6-3, 6-2. Spain’s Rafael Jodar advanced after Alexander Muller retired while trailing 6-2, 2-0. Luciano Darderi also moved forward due to a walkover against Yannick Hanfmann.

Spain’s Daniel Merida Aguilar, France’s Titouan Droguet, Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, and Germany’s Daniel Altmaier were among the early winners.

Later, Botic van de Zandschulp, Mariano Navone, Merida Aguilar, and Marozsan secured their spots in the semifinals. Third seed Marozsan defeated Altmaier 6-2, 7-6 (5), while Merida Aguilar overcame Droguet 4-6, 7-6 (7), 3-1 before the French player retired.
