The Significance of Durga Saptashati: Powerful Mantras and Rituals Explained
Discover the importance of Durga Saptashati, its rituals, and powerful mantras that bring spiritual benefits during Navratri.

New Delhi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : The festival of Sharadiya Navratri holds immense significance in Hinduism. For nine days, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga with various rituals. During this period, the recitation of Durga Saptashati is also performed in homes and temples. It is believed that daily recitation brings courage, spiritual protection, and prosperity.
Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is a part of the Markandeya Purana, authored by sage Vedavyasa. This scripture consists of 13 chapters and 700 verses. The term ‘Saptashati’ translates to ‘seven hundred’, referring to the 700 verses that describe Goddess Durga’s victory over demons like Mahishasura. Specific rituals, including Tryangam and Navangam, are followed for correct recitation, typically conducted during Navratri or in sessions of one, three, or seven days.
Religious beliefs suggest that reciting Durga Saptashati daily or during Navratri yields numerous spiritual and personal benefits. The recitation should be performed with proper rituals and purity. It can be completed in one day or over nine days during auspicious occasions. To ensure proper recitation, devotees should choose from various methods based on time, devotion, and occasion. For those needing assistance, two methods—Tryangam and Navangam—can be followed.
To begin the recitation, one must lay a red cloth facing east and place an image or idol of Goddess Durga on it. Before starting the recitation of Durga Saptashati, the space should be purified with kumkum, rice, and flowers, followed by a prayer. Devotees should also mark their foreheads with roli and purify themselves with achaman four times.
Before commencing the recitation, taking a bath and wearing clean clothes is essential. Focus on Goddess Durga while starting the recitation, beginning with the Durga Kavach. It is customary to recite the Kavach before starting the Saptashati. Additionally, a lamp should be lit in front of the image of Goddess Durga. After completing the regular recitation, an Aarti should be performed, followed by seeking forgiveness from the goddess. Offerings or prasad should be made, with sugar candies considered particularly auspicious. After the Aarti, distribute the prasad and pray for happiness in the home.
The first chapter of Saptashati narrates the slaying of the demon Madhu Kaitabh, while the second chapter describes the manifestation of Goddess Durga from the collective energy of the gods and the defeat of Mahishasura’s army. The third chapter details the slaying of Mahishasura and his generals. The fourth chapter consists of hymns sung by Indra and other deities in praise of the goddess. The fifth chapter describes the beauty of the goddess as narrated by Chanda and Munda before the demon Shumbha, while the sixth chapter recounts the killing of Dhumralochana.
The seventh chapter discusses the slaying of Chanda and Munda, and the eighth chapter covers the defeat of Rakthabija. The ninth and tenth chapters tell the story of Nishumbha and Shumbha’s defeat. The eleventh chapter discusses the blessings received through the praise of the gods and goddesses. The twelfth and thirteenth chapters extol the character of the goddess and recount the tale of Vaishya Surath, who received the goddess’s blessings.
These manifestations of the goddess and her forms in battle laid the foundation for the worship of ‘Navadurga’. Durga Saptashati contains 700 verses, categorized into three sections: the first character (Maha Kali), the second character (Maha Lakshmi), and the third character (Maha Saraswati). These three forms are the essence of divine power, reinforcing the worship of the nine different goddesses (Navadurga).
It is believed that reciting Durga Saptashati liberates one from fear, sorrow, and all forms of suffering. This recitation is particularly effective during Navratri, yielding significant results.
Each verse of Durga Saptashati holds unique importance, providing various benefits to devotees. For instance, the mantra “Sarva Mangala Mangalye, Shive Sarvartha Sadhike, Sharanye Tryambake Gauri, Narayani Namostute” is considered highly beneficial for starting any auspicious task, ensuring family happiness, and fulfilling all desires.
Another powerful mantra, “Om Jayanti Mangala Kali Bhadrakali Kapalini Durga Kshama Shiva Dhatri Swaha Swadha Namostute,” is chanted for victory in life, averting crises, and achieving success through the blessings of Goddess Durga.
The mantra “Shoolena Pahi No Devi Pahi Khadgen Chamike, Ghantashvane Na Pahi Chapajyanisvane Na” creates a spiritual shield, protecting against negative energy, evil eyes, fears, and enemies.
The mantra “Sarva Badha Prashamanam Trailokyasya Akhileshwari, Evameva Tvaya Karyam Asmad Vairi Vinashanam” is a prayer for the destruction of hidden or visible enemies and alleviating major life obstacles.
Lastly, the mantra “Sarva Badha Vinirmukto Dhanadhanya Sutanvitah, Manushyo Mat Prasadena Bhavishyati Na Sanshayah” invokes Goddess Durga’s grace for prosperity, wealth, and happiness in progeny.
Always keep the book of Shri Durga Saptashati covered with a red cloth. During the recitation days, abstain from non-vegetarian food, alcohol, garlic, and onions. Maintain complete celibacy and physical and mental purity during the recitation, ensuring no ill feelings towards others.
