The Journey of Zaira Wasim: From Dangal to Leaving Bollywood Behind
Zaira Wasim gained fame with Dangal but surprised many by leaving Bollywood to focus on her faith.

Srinagar, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : Zaira Wasim, a prominent figure in Bollywood, captured the hearts of many at a young age. She made her debut in the industry with Aamir Khan’s film “Dangal,” which instantly brought her into the spotlight. Her performance was widely praised, earning her a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Born on October 23, 2000, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Zaira completed her early education in the region. Her passion for acting emerged during her school years, where she had the opportunity to showcase her talent in a school play. This led her principal to recommend her to a casting director who visited Kashmir, opening doors for her in commercials for brands like Microsoft and Tata Sky.
The turning point in Zaira’s career came in 2016 when she starred in “Dangal,” portraying the young Geeta Phogat. Her portrayal was both authentic and diligent, quickly making her a household name. The film was a massive box office success, and Zaira’s performance earned her significant recognition.
Following the success of “Dangal,” Zaira appeared in “Secret Superstar” in 2017, again alongside Aamir Khan. In this film, she played the role of Insia, a girl aspiring to be a singer but constrained by family pressures. Her performance resonated with audiences, contributing to the film’s success.
Zaira’s third major film, “The Sky Is Pink,” released in 2019, featured her alongside Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar. While her performance received acclaim, it was also in this year that Zaira made a surprising announcement. She took to social media to declare her departure from the film industry, citing that her work was impacting her relationship with her faith. Zaira expressed that acting was distancing her from Islam, prompting her to step away from Bollywood.
This decision sparked widespread discussion on social media, with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. Despite the controversy, Zaira remained steadfast in her choice and distanced herself from film projects.
Post-retirement from acting, Zaira continues to engage with her followers on social media, often sharing motivational quotes. In 2025, she announced her marriage on Instagram, marking a new chapter in her life.
