The Journey of Gulshan Kumar: From Juice Seller to Music Industry Monarch

Mumbai, May 4: May 5 is not just a date on the calendar; it marks the birth of a personality who transformed the Indian music industry. We are talking about Gulshan Kumar, a name that still resonates in the hearts of music lovers. Born in 1956 into a modest Punjabi Arora family in Delhi, Gulshan never imagined he would become the founder of India’s largest music brand, T-Series.

His early life was quite ordinary. His father ran a juice shop in the Daryaganj area of Delhi, and Gulshan helped him with the business. However, his dreams extended far beyond that small shop. After completing his education, he took over the juice shop, but his aspirations lay elsewhere. He always yearned to do something different.

Gradually, he realized that music had a profound impact on people’s lives. This epiphany changed the course of his life. He left the juice shop to start a small venture recording and selling affordable cassettes and songs. At that time, the music industry was not as expansive, and cassettes were expensive for the average person. Gulshan seized this opportunity and decided to make music accessible at lower prices.

Thus began the story of Super Cassettes Industries Limited (T-Series). The journey was not easy; struggles were many, but his vision was clear: music should reach every home. Slowly, his company gained momentum and became popular among the masses.

Gulshan Kumar’s real turning point came with the 1990 film ‘Aashiqui.’ The songs from this film created a sensation across the country, breaking sales records for cassettes. Overnight, T-Series emerged as a major music brand. This film also catapulted singers like Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal to stardom.

Gulshan Kumar was not just a businessman; he was also a talent scout who recognized new artists. He gave significant opportunities to many singers, including Sonu Nigam, steering their careers in new directions. Many refer to him as the godfather of the music industry for providing a platform to countless artists. He himself had sung several devotional songs.

Apart from music, Gulshan Kumar was known for his devotion and philanthropic spirit. He was a devout follower of Lord Shiva and Mata Vaishno Devi. He established a community kitchen at Vaishno Devi that still provides free meals to pilgrims. He frequently visited temples and dedicated a significant part of his life to religious activities and charity.

His simplicity also left a lasting impression on people. Despite being the owner of a massive business, he remained humble and lived a simple life, always ready to help those in need.

Through T-Series, he not only transformed the music industry but also gave a new direction to the Indian entertainment world. However, his life journey was cut short. On August 12, 1997, he was murdered, a tragedy that shook the entire industry.
