The Importance of Balanced Sleep in Daily Life

New Delhi, February 9: In today’s fast-paced world, some people stay up late while others oversleep. However, few realize the critical importance of maintaining a proper balance between sleep and wakefulness. According to traditional Greek medicine, this balance is considered one of the fundamental principles of a healthy life. Disruption of this balance can lead to various health issues.

Greek medicine posits that sleep is not merely a time for rest; it is the most crucial period for the body’s repair. During sleep, the body’s inner strength, referred to as “Ruh-e-Hayat,” remains intact and works to mend damaged parts.

This time allows for balanced digestion, provides mental tranquility, and generates new energy in the body. Insufficient sleep can weaken the body, increase irritability, and impair cognitive functions.

Conversely, excessive wakefulness is also deemed harmful according to Greek principles. Staying up late or working continuously can lead to an increase in heat and dryness in the body. The brain, eyes, and nerves are the first to be affected, resulting in headaches, irritation, restlessness, dry mouth, and fatigue. Prolonged wakefulness can deplete the body’s moisture, leading to weakness and premature aging.

Greek medicine also warns that oversleeping can be detrimental. Excessive sleep can increase coldness and humidity in the body, causing sluggishness in bodily functions, weakened digestion, and lethargy. Those who sleep too much often face issues like obesity, heaviness, gas, cough, and lack of motivation.

To maintain good health, Greek medicine recommends that the ideal sleep duration should be tailored to an individual’s temperament and age. Children require more sleep, while the elderly need less. Similarly, individuals with a warm temperament should aim for balanced and light sleep, while those with a cooler temperament must be cautious not to oversleep. The best sleep is considered to be that which occurs at night, allowing one to wake up refreshed in the morning.
