Thalapathy Vijay Emerges as a Political Force in Tamil Nadu Elections

Chennai, May 4: South Indian cinema superstar Thalapathy Vijay is making waves in the political arena. His party, the Tamilga Vetria Kazhagam (TVK), has delivered an impressive performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections of 2026.

Vijay’s party has captured significant attention, surpassing the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Vijay himself won the seats in Perambur and Tiruchirappalli. This moment is particularly special for Vijay as he transitions from cinema to politics. His latest film, “Jan Nayakan,” is set to release soon, while he is emerging as a ‘Jan Nayak’ in the political landscape.

The question arises: when and why did Vijay enter politics? Many prominent stars from South Indian cinema have been active in politics. Following this trend, Vijay officially announced his party, TVK, on February 2, 2024. His interest in politics had been evident since the COVID pandemic, prompting him to establish the party in 2024 and contest in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. On the same day, he also declared his retirement from the film industry.

In April 2026, Vijay released a manifesto promising significant initiatives. He pledged financial assistance of ₹2,500 per month to female heads of households and six free gas cylinders annually. Additionally, he promised eight grams of gold and silk sarees for the marriages of underprivileged daughters. For unemployed youth, he announced a monthly stipend of ₹4,000 for graduates and ₹2,500 for diploma holders, along with guaranteed loans, debt relief for small farmers, and 200 units of free electricity for every household.

Vijay emphasized that politics for him is not a hobby but a “sacred service.” His political journey has not been without challenges, as his personal life has also faced turmoil. His wife, Sangeeta Sornalingam, filed for divorce, shocking Tamil Nadu. She accused Vijay of extramarital affairs, claiming she had been trying to mend their relationship for the past two years without success.

The couple married in 1999 and has two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Sasha. Vijay began his film career as a child artist in 1984, with his first film “Vettri” directed by his father, S.A. Chandrasekhar. He worked in several films as a child artist and made his lead debut in “Nalaya Thirupu” in 1992. The film “Poove Unakkaga” in 1996 established him as a romantic hero.

Since then, he has delivered numerous hit films, earning the title of Thalapathy. During his nomination, Vijay disclosed his assets, which total ₹404.58 crores, including ten properties and several luxury cars.
