Chennai, 2 January. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Chennai to participate as the chief guest in a fireside chat event at IIT Madras. During his address, he referred to his recent visit to Bangladesh.
Jaishankar had travelled to Dhaka to attend the funeral of Khaleda Zia on behalf of India. Speaking on this, he said that if a neighbour is friendly and does not cause harm, naturally relations with them will develop. He also made a significant statement regarding Pakistan.
Speaking about India’s neighbourhood policy, S Jaishankar said, “I was in Bangladesh two days ago. We have many neighbours in different ways. If a neighbour is good or does not cause harm, you naturally build relations with them. India helps such neighbours as a matter of course. Most of our neighbours received the first consignment of vaccines from India.”
With elections scheduled in Bangladesh in February this year, the External Affairs Minister extended best wishes to Bangladesh for the polls and expressed hope that once things settle, the good neighbourly relationship will continue.
On the Ukraine conflict, he stated, “It caused many difficulties. We helped neighbours with food and other essentials. Sri Lanka was facing a severe economic crisis; we provided four billion dollars in aid. Good neighbours do this. When a cyclone hit Sri Lanka, we reached there the same day and carried out all rescue operations.”
Targeting Pakistan, S Jaishankar remarked, “We have the right to protect our people from terrorists. We do whatever is necessary for our defence. But if you have had terrorism for decades, you cannot be a good neighbour. You cannot maintain good neighbourly ties or share water with someone who continues to support terrorism.”
