Tarique Rahman Takes Charge as BNP Chairman After Khaleda Zia’s Demise

New Delhi: Following the passing of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman has assumed leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The BNP Standing Committee has officially approved Tarique Rahman as the party’s new chairman.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, the decision was made during a meeting held on Friday night at the BNP office in Gulshan. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the appointment to the media after the meeting.

All members of the committee unanimously agreed to entrust Tarique Rahman with the responsibility of party president. With the consensus in place, Tarique formally took charge of the position in accordance with the BNP constitution.

Tarique Rahman’s Political Journey

As per BNP media sources, Tarique’s political involvement began during the anti-Ershad movement when he actively participated in protests alongside his mother. The Dhaka Tribune reports that Tarique joined the party in 1988 as a general member of the Gabtali Upazila unit.

Before the 1991 general elections, he campaigned with Khaleda Zia across almost every district in the country. In 1993, Tarique organised a conference for the BNP’s Bogura district unit where local party leaders were elected through secret ballot. He subsequently encouraged other district units to adopt democratic procedures for selecting their leaders.

In 2002, the BNP Standing Committee appointed Tarique Rahman as senior joint secretary. By 2005, he had organised grassroots-level conferences nationwide and consulted BNP units in every upazila of Bangladesh.

During the 2007 one-eleven period, Tarique was arrested and later sent abroad for medical treatment. He remained in exile from 2008 until his return to Bangladesh on 25 December 2025.

Earlier, in 2009, he was elected senior vice-chairman of the BNP. When Khaleda Zia was imprisoned in 2018, Tarique was named the party’s acting chairman.

This leadership transition marks a significant moment for the BNP as Tarique Rahman steps forward to lead the party into its next chapter.
