Tamil Nadu Government Maintains Temporary Halt on Crop Loan Recovery Amid Farmer Complaints

Chennai, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has reaffirmed that there is a temporary halt on the recovery of outstanding crop loans issued through cooperatives. This announcement comes in response to complaints from farmers who reported receiving calls demanding repayment of these loans.

In its statement, the government clarified that this moratorium specifically applies to the recovery of overdue crop loans from cooperative societies. Farmers have been instructed to report any cooperative that attempts to collect these debts, despite the existing directives.

Following reports of recovery efforts via phone, the government has taken steps to remind all farmers of the temporary halt. A WhatsApp number has also been provided for farmers to lodge complaints regarding such incidents.

According to the government’s statement, the Registrar of Cooperatives has communicated this decision through a circular to regional registrars and the managing directors of district central cooperative banks.

Officials have been directed to ensure compliance with the temporary halt on loan recovery among the relevant cooperatives. All cooperatives have been mandated to adhere to the circular, with the government monitoring their compliance closely.

Farmers who receive calls or any form of communication regarding repayment from a cooperative can file a complaint through the official WhatsApp grievance number at 9884000845. The government emphasized the importance of providing specific information when reporting these recovery attempts to facilitate identification and further action on the matter.
