Tamil Nadu Assembly Budget Session Resumes with Question Hour

Chennai, August 27: The Tamil Nadu Assembly’s budget session has resumed as of Thursday. This marks the first time ‘Question Hour’ will take place since the TVK government took office.

On August 5, the general budget for 2026-27 was presented, followed by the agricultural budget on August 6. Members discussed both financial documents on August 7, 10, and 11. Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod responded to the discussions on August 12, outlining the government’s financial priorities and agricultural plans. Department-wise discussions on grant demands began on August 17.

So far, discussions on grant demands from 27 departments have been completed. Proceedings were halted on Wednesday due to the government holiday for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. However, they are set to resume Thursday morning, starting with ‘Question Hour.’

Typically, the assembly addresses around ten questions during this time, but only five have been listed so far. Sources indicate that the reduced number of questions is due to delays in receiving complete responses from relevant departments regarding the queries raised by legislators.

Following ‘Question Hour,’ BJP MLA Bhojarajan may draw the government’s attention to a proposal to hand over the Ooty Boat House to a private operator. This issue is expected to spark extensive discussions on the management of public tourism assets and necessary safety measures in any private partnership arrangements.

Subsequently, the assembly will consider grant demands related to the Department of Social Justice and the welfare of backward classes, extremely backward classes, and minorities. Both ruling coalition and opposition members are anticipated to participate in discussions, raising questions about the implementation of welfare programs, fund allocation, and delivering benefits to eligible communities.

Social Justice Minister Vanniyarsu and Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes, and Minorities V. Sampathkumar are expected to respond to the issues raised by legislators. Before voting on the grant demands, both ministers are also likely to announce new plans and policy measures related to their respective departments.
