Taliban welcome extension of UN mission mandate

Kabul, March 18 ( /Sputnik) The Taliban-led (under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) Afghan government welcomes the extension of the mandate of the ted Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), as it serves the interests of the country, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Friday. Earlier this week, the ted Nations Security Council extended the UNAMA mandate until March 17, 2023. “The extension of the UN mission in Afghanistan is in Afghanistan’s interest, which we welcome. We hope that through UN, the international comm ty will strengthen and formalize relations with the Islamic Emirate, as well as support and assist the people of Afghanistan in the humanitarian, medical and construction sectors,” Mujahid tweeted. The Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in the fall of 2021 and established an interim government led by Mohammad Hasan Akhund, a prominent member of the first Taliban cabinet.
