T20 World Cup: Will Kuldeep Yadav Replace Varun Chakravarthy in the Final?

Ahmedabad, March 7: The Indian cricket team has secured a spot in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. They will face New Zealand in the final match scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, Varun Chakravarthy’s recent form has emerged as a significant concern for the team.

Varun Chakravarthy gained fame as a ‘mystery spinner’. His leg-spin has posed a considerable challenge for batsmen. With his enigmatic bowling, he has achieved great success in the IPL and international cricket over the past two years. Currently, he holds the top position in the ICC rankings for the T20 format. His presence has kept Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing eleven, but it seems that opposing batsmen have found a way to tackle Varun’s mystery spin during the World Cup.

In the group stage, Varun was effective against smaller teams, taking 9 wickets in 4 matches. However, his magic seems to have faded in the Super 8 stage. Batsmen from opposing teams are reading his deliveries with ease and hitting him for boundaries without difficulty. In the Super 8’s three matches, Varun managed to take only 3 wickets while being expensive. His performance in the semi-final against England was particularly disappointing, where he conceded 64 runs in 4 overs and took just 1 wicket, putting India in a tight spot.

Despite these challenges, the Indian team has made it to the final. It remains to be seen whether head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav will retain Varun in the playing eleven or give Kuldeep Yadav a chance.

Although Kuldeep has not yet played, there is no doubt that he is currently one of the best wrist spinners. He has experience playing in high-stakes matches and has led the Indian team to victories. Therefore, if he is given a chance in the final over Varun, it would not come as a surprise.

Kuldeep has taken 95 wickets in 54 T20 matches and has played only one match in the T20 World Cup 2026 against Pakistan, where he bowled well, taking 1 wicket for just 14 runs in 3 overs.
