Meerut, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team of the Indian Air Force performed breathtaking aerial maneuvers in Meerut for the first time. Held on September 19 and 20, the two-day air show attracted over 100,000 attendees, including students, NCC cadets, and volunteers from the National Service Scheme.
On September 20, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth attended the event, praising it as a remarkable display of discipline, precision, teamwork, and professionalism. He highlighted that the show showcased the glorious capabilities of the Indian Air Force. Seth commended the courage and dedication of the Surya Kiran team, noting that they have conducted over 800 air shows both in India and abroad over their 30-year journey.
The team dazzled the audience with nine red and white Hawk MK-132 aircraft, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in India. The display included thrilling maneuvers such as loops, barrel rolls, inverted flights, and the famous DNA maneuver. The pilots demonstrated exceptional flying skills, precision, and coordination throughout the performance.
One of the most challenging aspects of the Surya Kiran team’s flight is their ability to fly in close formation, often within five meters of each other. This proximity showcases the extraordinary skill, discipline, and trust among the pilots. The Hawk MK-132 aircraft have also undergone significant indigenous modifications, including smoke-generating devices that emit different colored smoke, developed at the Indian Air Force’s base repair depot in Nashik.
This technology allows the Surya Kiran aircraft to create vibrant saffron, white, and green trails in the sky, painting a tricolor display during their performance. Established in 1996, the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team is Asia’s only nine-aircraft aerobatic team and ranks among the world’s elite.
With over 800 performances in India, the team has also showcased the professionalism of the Indian Air Force at international air shows in countries such as China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, the UAE, and Dubai. Over three decades, Surya Kiran has evolved from merely an aerobatic team to a symbol of the Indian Air Force, representing excellence, discipline, precision, and dedication wherever they perform.
Additionally, their displays aim to inspire youth to consider careers in the defense services and provide them with an opportunity to witness the professional ethos of the Indian Air Force up close.
