New Delhi, March 12: The demand for induction cooktops in India has surged significantly due to rising tensions in the Middle East, which have raised concerns about potential disruptions in LPG supply.
As a result, several quick-commerce platforms, including Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket, have reported that induction cooktops are now “out of stock.”
Typically viewed as an alternative to LPG cylinders, the growing apprehension about LPG shortages has led consumers to increasingly adopt induction cooktops.
Major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart have also witnessed a substantial increase in orders for induction cooktops. According to an Amazon India spokesperson, sales of induction cooktops have skyrocketed by more than 30 times in just the past two days.
The spokesperson further noted that the demand for rice cookers and electric pressure cookers has surged to nearly four times the usual levels, while sales of air fryers and multi-use kettles have doubled.
Flipkart confirmed a similar trend, stating that sales of induction cooktops have quadrupled in the last four to five days compared to previous weeks.
The company highlighted that regions such as Delhi, Kolkata, and parts of Uttar Pradesh have seen particularly high demand, as consumers seek alternatives amid fears of price fluctuations and supply shortages.
This spike in demand reflects growing concerns about the availability of cooking gas in households and small businesses.
Ongoing conflicts in West Asia have heightened fears of disruptions in the supply of LPG and other energy resources. Additionally, oil marketing companies have reportedly requested LPG distributors to prioritize supply to essential institutions like hospitals and educational facilities.
In response, the government has increased domestic LPG production by approximately 25% and is directing the entire output to ensure a steady supply of cooking gas for domestic consumers amid the changing situation in West Asia.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the government issued an order on March 8, directing refineries and petrochemical companies to maximize LPG production.
