Supreme Court Extends Voter List Deadline in West Bengal

Kolkata, February 10: The Supreme Court held a hearing regarding the Special Inquiry Report (SIR) in West Bengal. During the proceedings, the court extended the deadline for publishing the final voter list by one week. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh stated that the Mamata Banerjee government has never cooperated with the Election Commission concerning the SIR.

In a media interaction in Kolkata, Ghosh emphasized that the people of Bengal are aware and have already filled out and submitted their forms ahead of the deadline. However, he expressed concerns that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government fears losing power if fraudulent voters—who have historically supported them—are removed from the voter list. As a result, the TMC has begun issuing threats even before the SIR process commenced.

Ghosh pointed out that the government has refused to cooperate with the SIR process, and the police department has not provided any security. Employees involved in the SIR, including Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other government staff, have reportedly delayed the process due to pressure, leading to the current situation.

He further claimed that notices have been issued to harass the public, aiming to prevent the timely completion of the SIR and keep fraudulent voters on the list.

Ghosh assured that the SIR would be completed without any pressure, and the people of Bengal would confidently cast their votes in the upcoming assembly elections.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court has extended the deadline for document verification and the final voter list in West Bengal by one week. The previous deadline for releasing the final voter list was February 14. The Supreme Court instructed the West Bengal government to ensure that the 8,505 Group B officers provided report to the election officer by 5 PM tomorrow. The Election Commission of India (ECI) may utilize these officers in place of its own.
