Pune, May 8: Supreeya Sule, the executive president of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), expressed her support for Sunetra Pawar, stating that she would be the first to congratulate her if Sunetra becomes the Chief Minister.
Sule emphasized that the political landscape for the 2029 elections remains uncertain. She made these remarks in response to a statement from young leader Jay Pawar, who mentioned that the people of Baramati wish to see Sunetra as Chief Minister in 2029.
Jay Pawar noted that recent discussions with party colleagues revealed a shared dream among Baramati residents for ‘Dada’ (Ajit Pawar) to become Chief Minister. However, following his untimely death, that dream remains unfulfilled. He believes Sunetra is working tirelessly towards this goal.
Jay expressed confidence that Sunetra will contest the upcoming assembly elections from Baramati and that the public hopes she will ascend to the Chief Minister’s position.
This statement comes at a time when Sunetra Pawar’s political popularity is at its peak. After taking oath as Maharashtra’s first female Deputy Chief Minister in January 2026 and receiving a strong mandate in May 2026, discussions about her potential as Chief Minister are seen as a strategic move for the Nationalist Congress Party to introduce a new and historic face in the next election cycle.
BJP MLA Praveen Darekar commented that while there is nothing wrong with Jay Pawar expressing the party workers’ wishes, the outcome ultimately depends on the majority.
Shiv Sena Minister Bharat Gogavale also remarked that we will have to wait until 2029 to see how things unfold.
State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant stated that children often aspire to become influential figures. However, he added that aligning with the BJP does not guarantee the Chief Minister’s position.
