Super Typhoon Champi, classified as one of the strongest storms of 2026, is moving across the western Pacific and is expected to impact Taiwan and Japan this weekend.

As of Wednesday, the storm recorded maximum sustained winds of 175 mph after peaking at 185 mph, making it equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane. Champi is currently located east of the Philippines and is tracking west-northwest at 15 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is predicted to approach Taiwan and eastern China, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls stated, “Heavy rain is expected to affect Taiwan from Thursday night into Saturday, with totals up to 18 inches, especially in northeastern Taiwan.” This significant rainfall raises concerns about flooding and mudslides.

Typhoon Champi has also posed a threat to Guam, passing within 10 miles of the island. The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Wind Warning for southern Guam with wind speeds expected between 115 and 135 mph.
