Sunil Gavaskar Advocates for Specialist Player in KKRs Lineup Amid Cameron Greens Bowling Absence

Mumbai, April 3: Cameron Green, the all-rounder for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has become a topic of discussion in IPL 2026 due to his inability to bowl. Cricket Australia has restricted him from bowling as part of a workload management strategy. This situation is affecting KKR’s team balance, prompting several former players from India to share their opinions.

Following KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane and former batsman Wasim Jaffer, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that KKR should consider including another specialist player in the playing eleven to maintain team balance in Green’s absence. KKR acquired Green for ₹25.20 crore at the auction, but he has not bowled in the first two matches. Cricket Australia has indicated that Green is recovering from a back injury, which will prevent him from bowling in the tournament’s initial 10 to 12 days.

Gavaskar emphasized that if Green is not bowling, the team must focus on its combination and may need to include another specialist batsman or bowler. He acknowledged Green’s batting capabilities but noted that his recent form has not been impressive. Jaffer added that the utilization of players in private tournaments should be entirely under the franchise’s control. He expressed on his social media account, ‘X,’ that failing to utilize a player’s full potential after acquiring them is unfair to the franchise.

After KKR’s loss in the previous match, when Rahane was asked about Green’s bowling absence, he advised seeking answers from Cricket Australia. Subsequently, Cricket Australia confirmed that Green is struggling with a back injury and will not bowl in the first three to four matches. However, he has been bowling in practice sessions, raising hopes that he will soon fulfill his role as an all-rounder. His batting performance has not met expectations so far; he scored only 18 runs against Mumbai and was run out for 2 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
