Kolkata, May 6: Tensions have escalated in West Bengal following the recent election results. Reports of violence, clashes, and vandalism are emerging from various locations. In response, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has taken a firm stance. He has directed immediate action against anyone involved in inciting violence or vandalism.
The Chief Election Commissioner has alerted senior state officials, including the Chief Secretary, DGP, Kolkata Police Commissioner, and Directors General of Central Armed Police Forces. He has instructed District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and police officials across all districts to maintain constant patrols to ensure the situation remains under control. The Election Commission has made it clear that any form of violence post-election will not be tolerated, and those responsible for inciting violence will be arrested immediately.
On Tuesday, a BJP worker named Madhu Mandal was brutally murdered in the Newtown area of Kolkata. Allegations suggest that TMC supporters were involved in this incident. Following the murder, there was significant outrage among the victim’s family and local residents, leading police to resort to baton charges to control the crowd.
Violence has not been limited to Newtown; reports of unrest have surfaced from several other areas in the state. In Jagatballavpur, Howrah, a TMC office was set ablaze, while clashes erupted in the Hogg Market area of Kolkata. Additionally, incidents of skirmishes and arson have been reported in Jalpaiguri, South 24 Parganas, and Asansol, involving both TMC and BJP supporters.
Political rhetoric has intensified during this period. Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign from her position as Chief Minister despite the election loss, claiming she was not defeated but rather wronged. She has also alleged tampering with EVMs and theft. On the other hand, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has criticized Banerjee, labeling her actions as unconstitutional and urging her to resign in respect of the public.
