Sri Lankans celebrate New Year at protest sites

Colombo, April 14 : The economic and financial crisis in Sri Lanka has forced people to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at the protest sites in the national capital. Protest sites in Sri Lanka’s capital became a place for celebration of the Sinhalese New year on Thursday for people who had staging demonstrations against the government for failing the economy. The anti-government protests in Galle Face Green has entered its sixth day. The protesters dawned the April New Year together at the Occupy Galle Face site, which has been renamed ‘Gota Go Gama’, NewsWire reported. Several rituals were held simultaneously at the location and in front of the Presidential Secretariat by the protesters to celebrate the New Year. According to media reports, one of the top Sri Lankan singers Victor Rathnayake has also joined the protest on Thursday. Amid the severe economic crisis, the citizens in several areas have reported no domestic LPG gas to cook authentic dishes on the occasion of Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Meanwhile, long queues were also seen in several parts of the island nation waiting to get fuel.
