Mumbai, March 20: A 58-year-old spiritual leader tragically took his own life at his monastery in Raichur district, Karnataka, leaving the local community in shock.
The deceased has been identified as Devendappa Swami, the head of the Jagadguru Shivananda Math located in Basapur (EJ) village of the Sindhanur taluk.
According to police reports, Devendappa Swami was reportedly suffering from depression. He established the monastery during his tenure in government service, where he worked as the headmaster of a government primary school in Mullur (EJ) village.
Over time, he developed a sense of detachment from worldly life, leading to the establishment of the monastery. After school hours, he would conduct religious discourses at the monastery.
Originally from Guluguli village in Gadag district, Devendappa had been serving as a teacher in Sindhanur taluk for the past 20 years. He had been living away from his family, and the exact reason for his suicide remains unclear. However, locals believe that depression may be a contributing factor.
His body was discovered hanging in the monastery’s dining hall. A case has been registered at the Turvihal police station.
Notably, in 2022, another spiritual leader, Basava Siddhaling Swamiji of the Madivaleshwar Math, committed suicide in his room in Neginahala village, Belagavi district, after being distressed by allegations of sexual harassment.
An audio clip of two women discussing the exploitation of women and girls at the Chitradurga Math went viral on social media. According to police sources, both women mentioned the late Basava Siddhaling Swamiji, tarnishing his reputation and honor.
Devastated by the events, the swamiji had lodged a complaint with the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Bailahongala, seeking action against those targeting Lingayat saints.
