Special Session on Womens Reservation to be Held in Tripura Assembly on April 30

Agartala, April 27: A one-day session of the Tripura Assembly will be convened on April 30 to discuss strengthening and safeguarding women’s constitutional rights. This session will emphasize efforts to amend the Constitution through the 131st Amendment Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.

Following a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia called the special session after receiving a petition from 17 members of the Assembly, including the government’s chief whip, Kalyani Saha Roy.

Nath informed the media that the petition called for nationwide consensus among all parliamentary political parties and urged the central government to initiate the delimitation process based on the 2011 census.

He stated that the proposal also calls for renewed efforts to amend the Constitution under the 131st Amendment Bill, which aims to reserve one-third of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The 17 Assembly members wrote to the Speaker, leading to the convening of the session on April 30. Nath further mentioned that given the seriousness of the issue, the Speaker decided to call the session, and a meeting of the Advisory Committee took place today to prepare for it.

Once the proposal is passed, the Assembly will appeal to all political parties through the central government to raise this issue in Parliament and seek its passage.

He emphasized that this is an extremely important matter.

During the session, tributes will be paid to the recently deceased former minister Karthik Kanya Debbarma and the legendary singer Asha Bhosle. After the tribute, the Advisory Committee’s report will be presented, followed by discussions on the main agenda. Nath also mentioned that he oversees the Agriculture and Power Ministries.
