South Korea and Iran Discuss Safe Passage in Hormuz Strait

Seoul, May 3: South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Choi Hyun, spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Saturday, urging for the resumption of safe maritime passage through the Hormuz Strait.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Choi emphasized that South Korean and other foreign vessels remain stranded in this crucial maritime route. He stated that it is essential to restore their safe movement.

Choi also expressed hope for a swift return to peace and stability, noting that the ongoing conflict impacts global security and economies. In response, Araghchi represented Iran’s stance regarding ongoing discussions with the United States.

This conversation marks the third dialogue between the two ministers since tensions escalated following U.S.-Israeli attacks at the end of February. The Ministry reported that this latest discussion was initiated by Iran.

Since the onset of the conflict, a total of 26 South Korean vessels, carrying over 170 individuals, have been trapped in the Hormuz Strait.

In early April, U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire deadline and called for a concrete peace proposal from Iran, while simultaneously increasing pressure through naval blockades and economic sanctions.

On Friday, Trump stated that he was not satisfied with Iran’s new proposal. Last month’s direct talks between the two nations in Islamabad concluded without any results.

South Korea’s presidential spokesperson, Kang Yu-jung, stated on April 29 that the country supports the freedom of maritime routes and the safety of all vessels under international regulations. She also noted that discussions with Iran continue based on these principles.

Earlier in April, South Korea dispatched its former ambassador to Kuwait, Chung Byung-ha, as a special envoy to ensure the safe return of the stranded vessels.
