Mumbai, April 9: In today’s world, fans connect directly with their favorite stars through social media. However, there was a time when film news reached audiences solely through magazines and newspapers. During the 90s, Bollywood was rife with stories that often misrepresented friendships and relationships among stars. Actress Somy Ali recently shared a nostalgic tale, revealing how magazines portrayed her and Jeba Bakhtiar as rivals.
In a throwback post on social media, Somy Ali discussed the media culture of the 90s. She stated, “There was no social media back then for people to understand the real lives of celebrities. This allowed magazines and tabloids to fabricate stories at will. Audiences had no other means to learn the truth.”
Somy recalled a significant meeting in 1993, marking her first encounter with Jeba Bakhtiar. “We were both born in Pakistan, but I was raised in America. Magazines tried to create a narrative of competition between us based on this similarity, but the reality was entirely different.”
She emphasized, “The magazines’ attempts were never successful. In real life, there was no rivalry between Jeba and me; instead, we shared a relationship built on respect and understanding. I still remember that first meeting fondly and hold Jeba in high regard.”
Somy praised Jeba Bakhtiar, stating, “She is incredibly beautiful and a wonderful person. I wish her happiness and all the joy life can offer.”
Jeba Bakhtiar gained recognition with the film ‘Hina,’ released in 1991, where she starred alongside Rishi Kapoor and Ashwini Bhave. Directed by Randhir Kapoor, this love story set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan was well-received by audiences.
