Guwahati, May 8: Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Friday that the 75th anniversary of the reconstruction of the historic Somnath Temple represents India’s unwavering faith, civilization, and cultural renaissance.
In a post on X, Sarma praised the spiritual significance of the Somnath Temple and shared a Sanskrit verse, emphasizing that the temple’s reconstruction reflects India’s enduring cultural consciousness.
The Chief Minister wrote, “The 75 years of Somnath’s restoration symbolize India’s steadfast faith, civilization, and the spirit of cultural renaissance.”
He highlighted the temple’s spiritual importance by referencing the Sanskrit verse: “Somalingam narah drishtva sarvapapaih pramuchyate, labhate phalam manovanchitam mrutah svargam samashrayet.” The Somnath Temple is considered one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Sarma also recalled the significant role played by India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who contributed immensely to the temple’s reconstruction after independence.
According to him, it was Sardar Patel’s determination and vision that made the revival of the Somnath Temple possible, transforming it into a powerful symbol of national pride and cultural continuity after centuries of invasions and destruction.
The Chief Minister noted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the mantra of ‘development and heritage’ is being realized, which aims to preserve India’s cultural heritage while promoting modern development.
Located on the western coast of Gujarat, the Somnath Temple holds a significant place in India’s spiritual and historical landscape. The current temple structure was inaugurated in 1951 as part of a comprehensive reconstruction campaign initiated after independence.
The temple trust is currently chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In recent years, several infrastructure and tourism projects have been launched to enhance facilities for pilgrims and tourists.
The 75th anniversary of the temple’s restoration is being celebrated with memorial events and renewed focus on India’s cultural heritage and spiritual traditions.
