Seoul, March 14 : South Korea has reported 309,790 new Covid-19 cases as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 6,866,222, the health authorities said on Monday. The daily caseload was down from 350,188 in the previous day due to fewer tests over the weekend, but it hovered above 300,000 for the third consecutive day, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said. The recent resurgence was driven by infections in the Seoul metropolitan area amid the Omicron variant spread. Of the new cases, 56,807 were Seoul residents. The number of the newly infected people living in Gyeonggi province and the western port city of Incheon was 77,420 and 18,238 respectively. The virus spread also raged in the non-metropolitan region. The number of new infections in the non-capital areas was 157,263, or 50.8 percent of the total local transmission. Among the new cases, 62 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 30,302. The number of infected people who were in a serious condition stood at 1,158, up 84 from the previous day. A total of 200 more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 10,595. The total fatality rate was 0.15 percent. The country has administered COVID-19 vaccines to 44,907,445 people, or 87.5 percent of the total population, and the number of the fully inoculated people was 44,434,348, or 86.6 percent of the population.
