Mumbai, April 29: Actor Shekhar Suman is currently focused on nurturing future talent through the film academy SSF, stepping away from acting. In a recent interview, he expressed sharp criticism regarding the changing dynamics of the industry and the growing neglect of the Hindi language.
Suman raised concerns about the increasing ‘Anglicization’ and ‘colonial mentality’ in Hindi cinema. He stated, “When artists working in Hindi films receive awards, they deliver their acceptance speeches in English. Have you ever seen an actor in Hollywood giving a speech in Hindi after winning an award? This is a colonial hangover.”
He emphasized that while the British have left, we remain mentally enslaved. “Earlier, we were forced into submission at gunpoint, but today, we have become ‘poor’ mentally without any pressure. We should take pride in our roots,” he added.
The actor also objected to the excessive use of the letter ‘A’ in film titles. He questioned why there is a tendency to alter the names of Indian cultural epics.
“Why do people say ‘Rama’ instead of ‘Ram’ and ‘Mahabharata’ as ‘Mahabharata’? These are English words, yet the films are made in Hindi. The title ‘Ramayana’ should retain its original dignity without the ‘A’ added,” he remarked.
Suman expressed frustration when receiving Hindi scripts in Roman script. He urged the industry to present scripts in Devanagari. “Many Hindi words and meanings change entirely when written in English letters. If it’s Hindi, it should be in Devanagari. Today’s children lack even basic knowledge of Hindi. Parents need to pay more attention to this. In France, people speak French; in Japan and China, they prioritize their languages. If someone speaks English there, they are stared at. Only we hesitate to speak our own language in our own country,” he concluded.
