New Delhi, April 17: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sharply criticized the central government over the Delimitation Bill, labeling it as ‘political demonetization.’ Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Friday, he warned that rushing this process could harm the country’s federal structure.
Tharoor flipped the well-known slogan ‘Just Do It’ to ‘Don’t Do It.’ He referenced the 2016 demonetization, calling it a lesson learned. “You are bringing delimitation forward with the same haste as demonetization. We witnessed the damage it caused. Delimitation could also prove to be political demonetization, so do not implement it,” he stated.
He emphasized the need to address three major issues in delimitation. First, maintaining a balance between small and large states. Second, ensuring justice for states that have adhered to population control policies. Tharoor accused the bill of rewarding states that have failed in population control while doing injustice to southern states.
DMK MP Kanimozhi also targeted the central government, claiming that the attempt to pass this bill within a few days during a special session is a conspiracy. She asserted that states have rights under the Constitution and should not be dependent on the center for every decision.
She alleged that the current government is ignoring the rights of states and seeks to control everything from Delhi. According to her, this move undermines the federal structure and weakens state autonomy.
Questioning the linkage of delimitation to reservations, she remarked that the central government is neither serious nor sensitive about women’s issues. Instead, it is using the 2011 census data for delimitation to benefit itself.
