Beijing, April 28: A severe storm and heavy rainfall alert has been issued for southern China. The China National Meteorological Center has maintained a blue alert for severe convective weather and a yellow alert for heavy rainfall as of Tuesday.
According to the weather agency, rain that began at 8 AM on Tuesday is expected to continue until 8 AM on Wednesday. Additionally, strong winds accompanied by thunder and hail are anticipated in the southern and southwestern regions. Wind speeds in some areas could exceed 62 km/h, while parts of Guangxi Zhuang may experience gusts reaching up to 89 km/h.
Warnings for extreme rainfall in a short duration have also been issued. In the southwestern regions, rainfall could exceed 20 mm per hour, with some areas in Guangdong Province and Guangxi potentially receiving over 50 mm per hour.
Moreover, the risk of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall remains. Intense rain is expected in Chongqing, Yunnan Province, Huai, and the southern regions of the Yangtze River. Some areas, including Anhui Province, Jiangxi Province, Guangxi, and Guangdong, may see rainfall totals between 100 to 130 mm.
The meteorological department has warned that the combined effects of severe storms and heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, government media reported that over 200 residents were evacuated from a city in southern China due to severe flooding caused by torrential rains, with several cars seen struggling in the rising waters. Significant disruptions occurred in the city of Jinzhou, located in the Guangxi region.
Given the current conditions, the meteorological department has advised local authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, while urging residents to stay updated on weather forecasts ahead of the May Day holiday.
