New Delhi, April 2 : It has been 11 years since Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Indian team fulfilled billion dreams when they lifted the World Cup trophy in 2011 after defeating Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India registered the historic 6-wicket win over the Islanders in the final to end 28-year long wait and became the the first host country to win the World Cup. The marquee event was cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar’s last and overall sixth World Cup. “Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years! Former cricketers, including Sachin, got nostalgic on the 11th anniversary of India’s 2011 historic World Cup triumph. Former India all-rounder and player of the 2011 World Cup Yuvraj Singh said: “It wasn’t just a world cup victory, it was the dream of a billion Indians being fulfilled. Proud to be a part of this team that wanted to win the cup for the country & for Sachin. Nothing can match the pride of wearing the tricolour & bringing glory to the nation.” Sachin took to twitter to share a picture in which he is seen standing between 1983 and 2011 World Cup-winning teams pictures and captioned it: “How the dream started and how it was accomplished.” “2nd of April – a day when billions jumped in joy! The day when India lifted the cup,” former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was also the member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team, tweeted. Ex-India left-hand batter Suresh Raina said: “A tournament that changed everything for Indian cricket, a moment when our dream got fulfilled. This moment will forever be close to our heart.” “A day to remember for a reason, where billions of dream came true. #Proud to b a part of team. Missing each one you Guys n each of the memories,” said former India pacer Munaf Patel. Before defeating SL, India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-final. In the final, chasing 274 runs target, India had a shaky start as the star opener was got out Virendra Sehwag for duck on the second ball of the innings before Sachin (18) was dismissed by Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga. Then, Gambhir (97) and Virat Kohli (35) anchored the innings with their 83-run partnership before the latter was sent back to hut by Tilakratane Dilshan. After Kohli’s dismissal, skipper Dhoni joined Gambhir and the duo stitched 109-run partnership before the left-hander was bowled by Thisara Parera. Then, Yuvraj Singh came to support his captain Dhoni and scored handy 21-run and Dhoni finished it off with a monstrous six to seal the deal. Dhoni was adjudged man of the match for his scintillating 91-run knock and Yuvraj was awarded player of the tournament for his all round performance.
